Potato prices at Polish marketplaces rose sharply in August. According to data from the national statistics office GUS, reported by Gazeta Olsztyńska, the average price reached 199.94 zł per decitonne. That is about 2 zł per kg.
The price was 27.1% higher than in July. However, it was still 2.4% lower than in August 2025. The trade portal DlaHandlu.pl also reported the 27.1% monthly rise.
Against the general trend
The jump in potato prices stood out in the August report. Most farm products became cheaper at marketplaces during the month. According to GUS, procurement prices of agricultural products rose 1.8% from July. Compared with August 2025, however, they were 12.3% lower.

The GUS report does not explain the monthly rise in potato prices, the newspaper noted. The report only records the price level and its changes.
What marketplace prices show
GUS collects two types of farm prices. Procurement prices show what buyers pay farmers for produce. Marketplace prices show what is paid at local markets, where farmers often sell directly.
Marketplace prices react quickly to local supply. In August, main-crop potatoes start to replace early potatoes. The monthly change can therefore reflect both harvest timing and crop size.

A 27.1% jump in one month is a strong signal at the start of the new marketing season. It suggests that demand at local markets met a tighter supply of potatoes in August. At the same time, prices stayed slightly below last year. This shows that the market has not returned to the high levels seen in some earlier seasons.
For growers, the August data support a careful sales plan. Selling part of the crop early may capture the higher prices. Keeping stored potatoes in good condition preserves options for later months. Traders should watch the September GUS data. It will show whether the price rise continues as more of the main crop is harvested.
